Course Outline
Virtualization Fundamentals
- Overview of Operating System Concepts: CPU, Memory, Network, Storage
- Hypervisor
- The Supervisor of Supervisors
- "Host" machine and "guest" operating system
- Type-1 and Type-2 Hypervisors
- Citrix XEN, VMware ESX/ESXi, MS Hyper-V, IBM LPAR.
- Network Virtualization
- Brief overview of the 7-Layer OSI Model
- Emphasis on the Network Layer
- TCP/IP Model or Internet Protocol
- In-Depth Look at a Single Vertical
- Application Layer: SSL
- Network Layer: TCP
- Internet Layer: IPv4/IPv6
- Link Layer: Ethernet
- Packet Structure
- Addressing: IP Addresses and Domain Names
- Firewalls, Load Balancers, Routers, Adapters
- Virtualized Networks
- Higher-order abstractions: Subnets, Zones.
- Practical Exercise:
- Explore the ESXi cluster and vSphere client.
- Create or update networks within an ESXi Cluster, deploy guests from VMDK packages, and enable inter-connectivity between guests in the ESXi cluster.
- Modify a running VM instance and capture a snapshot.
- Update firewall rules in ESXi using the vSphere client.
2. Cloud Computing: A Paradigm Shift
- A rapid, cost-effective pathway to make products or solutions available globally
- Resource Sharing
- Virtualization of virtualized environments
- Primary Advantages:
- On-demand resource elasticity
- Ideate -> Code -> Deploy without the need for dedicated infrastructure
- Accelerated CI/CD pipelines
- Environment isolation and vertical autonomy
- Security through layering
- Cost optimization
- On-demand resource elasticity
- On-premise Clouds and Cloud Service Providers
- Cloud as a powerful conceptual abstraction for distributed computing
3. Introduction to Cloud Solution Layers:
- IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service)
- AWS, Azure, Google
- Select one provider for subsequent sections. AWS is recommended.
- Introduction to AWS VPC, AWS EC2, etc.
- PaaS (Platform as a Service)
- AWS, Azure, Google, CloudFoundry, Heroku
- Introduction to AWS DynamoDB, AWS Kinesis, etc.
- SaaS (Software as a Service)
- Concise overview
- Microsoft Office, Confluence, SalesForce, Slack
- SaaS relies on PaaS, which relies on IaaS, which is built upon Virtualization
4. IaaS Cloud Practical Project
- This project utilizes AWS as the IaaS Cloud Provider
- Use CentOS/RHEL as the operating system for the remainder of the exercise
- Alternatively, Ubuntu is acceptable, though RHEL/CentOS are preferred
- Obtain individual AWS IAM accounts from your cloud administrator
- Each student must complete these steps independently
- The ability to provision your own infrastructure on-demand is the ultimate demonstration of cloud computing's power
- Utilize AWS Wizards -- the AWS online consoles -- to complete these tasks unless specified otherwise
- Establish a public VPC in the us-east- 1 Region
- Two Subnets (Subnet-1 and Subnet-2) located in two different Availability Zones
- Refer to https://docs.aws.amazon.com/vpc/latest/userguide/ for guidance.
- Create three distinct Security Groups
- SG-Internet
- Permits inbound traffic from the Internet on ports https 443 and http 80
- No other inbound connections are permitted
- SG-Service
- Allows inbound traffic exclusively from security group SG-Internet on ports https 443 and http 80
- Permits ICMP only from SG-Internet
- No other inbound connections are permitted
- SG-SSH:
- Permits inbound SSH:22 connections only from a single IP address matching the public IP of the student's lab machine. If the lab machine is behind a proxy, use the proxy's public IP.
- SG-Internet
- Two Subnets (Subnet-1 and Subnet-2) located in two different Availability Zones
- Provision an instance from an AMI corresponding to your chosen OS -- preferably the latest RHEL/CentOS versions available in AMIs -- and host it on Subnet-1. Associate the instance with the SG-Service and SG-SSH groups.
- Connect to the instance via SSH from your lab machine.
- Install an NGINX server on this instance
- Place static content of your choice -- such as HTML pages or images -- to be served by NGINX (on port 80 via HTTP) and define the respective URLs.
- Test the URL from the same machine.
- Create an AMI image from this running instance.
- Provision the new AMI and host the instance on Subnet-2. Associate the instance with the SG-Service and SG-SSH groups.
- Execute the NGINX server and verify that the access URL for the static content created in the previous step functions correctly.
- Create a new "classic" Elastic Load Balancer and associate it with SG-Internet.
- Note the differences between Application Load Balancers and Network Load Balancers.
- Define a routing rule that forwards all http 80 and https 443 traffic to the instance group comprising the two instances created above.
- Use any certificate management tool -- such as Java keytool -- to generate a key pair and self-signed certificate, then import the certificate into AWS Certificate Manager (ACM)
5. Cloud Monitoring: Introduction and Practical Project
- AWS CloudWatch metrics
- Navigate to the AWS CloudWatch dashboard for the instances
- Retrieve relevant metrics and analyze their variability over time
- https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/viewing_metrics_with_cloudwatch.html
- Retrieve relevant metrics and analyze their variability over time
- Access the AWS CloudWatch dashboard for the ELB
- Monitor the ELB metrics and explain their variability over time
- https://docs.aws.amazon.com/elasticloadbalancing/latest/classic/elb-cloudwatch-metrics.html
6. Advanced Concepts for Further Study
- Hybrid Cloud -- integrating on-premise and public cloud environments
- Migration: Moving from on-premise to public cloud
- Application code migration
- Database migration
- DevOps
- Infrastructure as a Code
- AWS Cloud Formation Templates
- Auto-scaling
- Utilizing AWS CloudWatch metrics to determine system health
