Combined JAVA, PHP and Web Application Security Training Course
Even seasoned developers do not always fully master the security services provided by their development platforms, nor are they always aware of the vulnerabilities relevant to their projects. This course is designed for developers working with both Java and PHP, equipping them with the essential skills needed to make their applications resilient against contemporary internet-based attacks.
The course explores layers of Java security architecture by addressing access control, authentication, authorization, secure communication, and various cryptographic functions. It also introduces various APIs that can be used to secure code in PHP, such as OpenSSL for cryptography and HTML Purifier for input validation. On the server side, best practices are provided for hardening and configuring the operating system, web container, file system, SQL server, and PHP itself, with a special focus on client-side security through the security issues of JavaScript, Ajax, and HTML5.
General web vulnerabilities are discussed using examples aligned with the OWASP Top Ten, illustrating various injection attacks, script injections, attacks against session handling, insecure direct object references, issues with file uploads, and many others. The various Java- and PHP-specific language problems and issues stemming from the runtime environment are introduced, grouped into the standard vulnerability types of missing or improper input validation, improper use of security features, incorrect error and exception handling, time- and state-related problems, code quality issues, and mobile code-related vulnerabilities.

Network Security and Secure Communication
21 HoursDeveloping a secure networked application can be challenging, even for developers who have prior experience with cryptographic building blocks such as encryption and digital signatures. To help participants grasp the role and application of these cryptographic primitives, this course first establishes a solid foundation regarding the core requirements of secure communication—namely, secure acknowledgment, integrity, confidentiality, remote identification, and anonymity. It also addresses common threats that compromise these requirements, alongside practical real-world solutions.
Given that cryptography is a critical component of network security, the course covers essential algorithms in symmetric cryptography, hashing, asymmetric cryptography, and key agreement. Rather than focusing on complex mathematical theories, these topics are examined from a developer’s perspective, highlighting typical use cases and practical considerations, such as the implementation of public key infrastructures. The course also introduces security protocols across various domains of secure communication, with detailed discussions on widely used protocol families like IPsec and SSL/TLS.
Typical cryptographic vulnerabilities associated with specific algorithms and protocols are explored, including BEAST, CRIME, TIME, BREACH, FREAK, Logjam, Padding oracle, Lucky Thirteen, POODLE, and RSA timing attacks. For each issue, the practical implications and potential consequences are outlined, avoiding deep mathematical derivations.
Finally, since XML technology is central to data exchange in networked applications, the security aspects of XML are thoroughly described. This includes the use of XML in web services and SOAP messages, along with protective measures like XML Signature and XML Encryption. The course also covers weaknesses in these protection mechanisms and XML-specific security issues, such as XML injection, XML External Entity (XXE) attacks, XML bombs, and XPath injection.

Secure Web Application Development and Testing
21 HoursProtecting web-accessible applications demands security professionals who are constantly up-to-date with the latest attack methods and trends. A wide array of technologies and environments facilitates the comfortable development of web applications. It is crucial to not only be aware of the security issues specific to these platforms but also of general vulnerabilities that apply regardless of the development tools used.
This course provides an overview of applicable security solutions in web applications, with a special focus on understanding the most important cryptographic solutions to be implemented. Various web application vulnerabilities are presented on both the server side (following the OWASP Top Ten) and the client side, demonstrated through relevant attacks, and followed by recommended coding techniques and mitigation methods to avoid the associated problems. The topic of secure coding is concluded by discussing some typical security-relevant programming mistakes in the areas of input validation, improper use of security features, and code quality.
Testing plays a very important role in ensuring the security and robustness of web applications. Various approaches – from high-level auditing through penetration testing to ethical hacking – can be applied to find vulnerabilities of different types. However, if you want to go beyond the easily found low-hanging fruits, security testing should be well planned and properly executed.
